Doug Downey to play a role in Ontario’s finances

Doug Downey, the newly minted MPP for Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte, will be taking on additional duties at Queen’s Park.

Downey, a lawyer and former Orillia councillor, will serve as parliamentary assistant to Ontario’s finance minister, Vic Fedeli.

“Finance touches on all areas of government, so it really lets me draw from my experience over the years in doing different things,” he told

Parliamentary assistants support ministers with legislative and committee matters, including special projects and assignments.

They also play a key role in building relationships and communicating government initiatives across the province.

Downey was one of 26 MPPs who were named parliamentary assistants by Premier Doug Ford.

Speaking on Monday (July 3), Downey said he would be participating in finance ministry briefings over the next couple of days.
