‘Amazingly insightful’ Barrie, Orillia Catholic educator Matt McCann dies

Matt McCann loved family, faith and education.

The longtime Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board educator died June 2. He was 62.

McCann began his teaching career in 1979 and worked in local Catholic high schools for 34 years — including stints at St. Joseph’s in Barrie and Patrick Fogarty in Orillia.

In an online tribute, Rev. Edwin Galea, who, as a pastor at Guardian Angels parish in Orillia, watched McCann in action at Patrick Fogarty, said the educator was “amazingly insightful.”

“I had the pleasure of collaborating with Matt and his dedicated team,” Galea said. “(His) faith permeated his career and the direction he gave to his students and staff. He is remembered with deep respect.”

McCann also taught in Poland for two years.

Through an obituary available at , his family noted they were “deeply touched by the stories of the countless times Matt helped others throughout his career and as a friend, St. Mary’s parishioner and advocate for all less fortunate.”

In 2011, he received the Catholic Principals’ Council of Ontario’s principal-of-the-year award. At the time, the council noted McCann’s “effort to champion the work and successes experienced by the children in (his) care.”

“Each (award recipient) has worked tirelessly on behalf of Catholic education, not only in their school communities but throughout their school boards,” the council said.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Hospice Simcoe or the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Parish Barrie.

Visitation is at Steckley-Gooderham funeral home, , in Barrie on June 7 from 2-7 p.m. Funeral mass is at St. Mary’s Church, , on June 8 from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
